An expert will evaluate your home and determine a long-term treatment plan to keep termites away year-round.

Types of Mississippi Termites

There are two primary varieties of termites found chomping away at Mississippi homes: Subterranean and Drywood Termites. Both types are incredibly destructive, but there are a few key differences that can help you identify your infestation and get the treatment you need.

  • Subterranean Termites. These termites are typically cream-colored and can grow up to 3/8 of an inch long. The soldier termites have brown heads (comparatively) big mandibles. The biggest difference between the Subterranean and Drywood termites is their nesting habits. While Drywood Termites are often found in dry wood, Subterranean Termites prefer to nest underground and tunnel around in mud tubes. These winding nests are a sign that you have an active termite infestation. If you see a mud tube, call your local Orkin specialist immediately!
  • Drywood Termites. These termites prefer to nest inside the materials (mostly wood) they infest, which is the most convenient option. Just imagine if your home was made of pizza. They absorb all of their moisture from the humidity in the air, so they do not need to burrow in soil to survive. Most Drywood termite soldiers and workers are larger than their Subterranean cousins and can grow up to 12 mm long.

Formosan Termite Treatment Options

The hearty and voracious Formosan Termite is of the Subterranean variety. They are some of the most destructive, hungriest termites in the world, and they cause over two billion dollars of property damage in the United States every year. The Formosans are also known as one of the most formidable termites because of the speed at which they eat. These little munching monsters can completely ravage a foundation before the homeowner even notices the damage.

Signs of Formosan Termites

  • Mud Tubes and Termite “Frass”
  • Shed Wings
  • Damaged Wood
  • Bubbles in Wallpaper or Ceiling

Preventative Termite Control

Did you know homeowners spend an average of $3,000 to repair termite damage? A less expensive solution is investing in preventative termite treatments. Orkin evaluates your property and tailors the perfect solution to deter and eliminate termite populations of all varieties and sizes.
