It’s a beautiful time of year to live in Mississippi! Spring welcomes pleasant weather and low humidity. Unfortunately, Spring also welcomes termites. Every year, thousands of Mississippi residents are shocked to discover that termites have sneakily infiltrated their home and are munching away in the walls, causing thousands of dollars in property damage. Although Mississippi is shut down, due to recent COVID-19 mandates, pest control is an essential business and Orkin has a few ways to help you fight against the incessant onslaught of termites. For those without a termite contract, this time of year is especially dangerous, because there is nothing standing between them and the millions of termites that have targeted their tasty dry wood. Orkin offers both Membership Plans and deferred payment solutions to help you finance your termite control project, so you can fight your termites with peace of mind. As an added bonus, Orkin is now offering $100 off termite contract services for new termite customers with an annual agreement! There has never been a better time to eliminate your termite problem.

“Swarm Season” and What it Means for Homeowners

Termite swarms are an indication that the local termites are starting to mate and form new colonies. Subterranean termites swarm during the spring and summer months, which is why so many Mississippi residents find themselves with subterranean termite problems starting around April or May. Drywood termites need moisture in the air to stay healthy, so they can be found swarming during the late summer and fall months. But even if you don’t see any termite swarms, that doesn’t mean they’re not covertly eating away at your home. A professional can tell you if you are in need of a serious extermination.

Types of Mississippi Termites

There are two primary varieties of termites found chomping away at Mississippi homes: Subterranean and Drywood Termites. Both types are incredibly destructive, but there are a few key differences that can help you identify your infestation and get the treatment you need.

Subterranean Termites: These termites are typically cream-colored and can grow up to 3/8 of an inch long. The soldier termites have brown heads (comparatively) big mandibles. The biggest difference between the Subterranean and Drywood termites is their nesting habits. While Drywood Termites are often found in dry wood, Subterranean Termites prefer to nest underground and tunnel around in mud tubes. These winding nests are a sign that you have an active termite infestation. If you see a mud tube, call your local Orkin specialist immediately!

Drywood Termites: These termites prefer to nest inside the materials (mostly wood) they infest, which is the most convenient option. Just imagine if your home was made of pizza. They absorb all of their moisture from the humidity in the air, so they do not need to burrow in soil to survive. Most Drywood termite solders and workers are larger than their Subterranean cousins and can grow up to 12 mm long.

Formosan Termites

The hearty and voracious Formosan Termite is of the Subterranean variety. They are some of the most destructive, hungriest termites in the world and they cause over two billion dollars of property damage in the United States every year. The Formosans are also known as one of the most formidable termites because of the speed at which they eat. These little munching monsters can completely ravage a foundation before the homeowner even notices the damage.

Signs of Formosan Termites

  • Mud Tubes and Termite “Frass”
  • Shed Wings
  • Damaged Wood
  • Bubbles in Wallpaper or Ceiling

Formosan termites typically swarm in Mississippi at night, during the late spring, which is why now is the perfect time to take preventative measures to protect your home!
